Suns Batter the Dirt Dawgs 6-1
August 3, 2013 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Pittsfield Suns News Release
The Pittsfield Suns (22-23) defeated the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (16-29) to once again pull within one game of .500 on the season. With just five games remaining after tonight, the Suns were able to take care of business against the last place team in the FCBL. By using timely hitting and a terrific pitching performance by Harrison Paige, the Dirt Dawgs really never threatened to win this one.
The Suns actually fell behind early 1-0, but that was all Harrison Paige allowed in the game. Paige threw eight solid innings, allowing just one run, on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters. Adam Whitt came on to get some work in a non-save situation in the fifth and retired the side in order, striking out one.
The offense scored their first two runs thanks to some shoddy defense by the Dirt Dawgs. Luke Reynolds scored the first run for the Suns in the third inning on a wild pitch by Wachusett starter Joey Gaouette. In the fourth,Steve Dill came around to score the second run after having reached on an error by the Wachusett third baseman. Derek Gardella brought home Dill on a perfectly placed infield single.
The rest of the runs scored by the Suns came by more conventional means. Kyle Singleton brought in Luke Reynolds with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Reynolds and John Kinne had back to back RBI singles in the sixth and Kinne added another RBI single in the eighth.
Ryan Olmo did not score or drive in a run but he did have 4 of the Suns 11 hits on the evening. His four hits were the most he had had in a game since going 3-for-3 on June 23rd.
With their win tonight coupled with a loss from the Seacoast Mavericks, the Suns extended their playoff cushion to 2.5 games with 8 games to play. The Suns play a huge doubleheader tomorrow in Torrington, a sweep could help solidify the Suns playoff positioning.
The Suns return to Wahconah Park Monday, August 5th against the Brockton Rox.
