Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --The Suns' 10-run fifth inning completed the team's first series win in more than a month in a 10-5 victory over the Orlando Rays in front of 7,119 fans Wednesday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Gookie Dawkins hit a grand slam and Tony Socarras blasted a three-run home run in the 10-run frame, the largest single inning output for the Suns this season.
Both starters shut out the opposition through four innings. Suns starter Joel Hanrahan (8-3) gave up two runs in the top of the fifth. He allowed three consecutive singles followed by Dan DeMent's RBI fielder's choice and a walk issued to B.J. Barns with the bases loaded.
The Suns (35-42 overall, 4-4 second half) erupted off Rays starter Matt White (0-3) in the bottom half of the inning. White faced 10 batters, walking three and retiring just one. With runners in scoring position, reliever Travis Minix struck out Reggie Abercrombie, but then allowed the home run to Socarras.
Despite getting out-hit 13-8, the Suns won their third consecutive game and first series victory since a three-game sweep of Mobile at the Baseball Grounds May 20-22.
Dawkins and Brennan King led the Suns with two hits.
The Rays (34-43, 2-6) lost their third consecutive game, stranding 11 baserunners.
The Suns will entertain the Birmingham Barons for a three-game series beginning 7:05 p.m. Thursday at the Baseball Grounds. Right-hander Tommy Farmer (5-5, 3.68 ERA) is scheduled to face Barons lefty Byeong An (1-0, 0.00).
SUNS SPOTS: The Dodgers promoted RHP Steve Langone to Class AAA Las Vegas and promoted RHP Joselo Diaz to Jacksonville from Class A-Advanced Vero Beach. Diaz, 22, is a converted catcher and is on the Dodgers' 40-man roster. Diaz went 5-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 15 games (11 starts). He will pitch out of the bullpen with the Suns.
