Orlando Rays News Release
Jacksonville, Fla.-Jacksonville exploded for 10 runs in the 5th inning as the Suns beat the Orlando Rays 10-5 in a Wednesday afternoon game at The Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville.
Orlando starting pitcher Matt White (0-3) was cruising through the first four innings, allowing only a walk and a second-inning single through the first four frames. In the fifth inning, however, the roof caved in, with Jacksonville reaching the big right-hander for nine runs on four hits and three walks, including a grand slam by Gookie Dawkins. Dawkins' homer was his third of the series and fourth on the season.
B.J. Barnes and Frank Moore drove in two runs apiece for the Rays, who dropped their third straight game to the Suns and fell to 2-6 for the second half of the season. Bartolome Fortunato and Evan Rust each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Orlando.
The Rays return to Orlando for a three-game series with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, Class AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, starting Friday at 7:05 p.m. Orlando will send LHP Jon Switzer (5-7, 3.98) to the hill in the opener. Gates will open at 6:05 and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a set of the 2003 Orlando Rays baseball cards.
