Arizona Sundogs News Release
BROOMFIELD, Colo. - The Arizona Sundogs and Rocky Mountain Rage would face off in the second of a two-game weekend series Sunday afternoon at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado. In an effort to rebound from Saturday night's loss the Sundogs would come out firing outshooting the Rage 15-10 in the first period but would be unable to match the goaltending of Rage goaltender David Guererra.
The Sundogs' Ryan Steeves would score what would seem to be the game's first goal batting it out of mid air past Rage netminder David Guerrera at the 6:36 mark. The goal however would be waived off by Referee Kris Schoech for a high stick. At 18:36 of the period the Rocky Mountain Rage would take the first lead of the game on an unassisted goal by Matic Kralj. Arizona would outshoot Rocky Mountain 15-10 in the period.
The second period would see 4:08 expire before the game's next goal. Trevor Weisgerber would push the puck past Arizona netminder Kevin Couture to take a 2-0 lead. Mark Wires and Craig Olynick assisted on the play. Both teams would see chances through the second but both goaltenders would keep the puck out of their own net for the remainder of the middle frame. At the 14:14 mark, Adam Stefishen would be tagged with a 10-minute game misconduct and a 10-minute attempt to injure penalty. The Sundogs would be unable to convert on the extended man advantage.
Both teams would match each other's play in the third period, neither team wanting to give up a goal. Each team would be penalized just once in the frame and the Rage's third goal would come at the 19:26 mark as Dominic Noel would find an empty net. The goal would be his fifth in two days against the Sundogs.
Kevin Couture appeared in net for the Sundogs for his second consecutive start against the Rage. Couture stopped 30 of 32 shots in the loss while David Guerrera stopped all 33 of Arizona's shots to collect his first shutout of the season. Both teams were unable to capitalize on the power play as Arizona finished 0-for-9 with the man advantage while the Rage finished 0-for-5. Next up for the Sundogs are the Amarillo Gorillas on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:00pm at the Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, Arizona. Tickets are still available by calling 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), visiting www.gettix.net or by stopping by the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
