Laredo Bucks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks fell 5-4 in a shootout in wild game that featured goalie fights, players entering the penalty box to fight and chaotic action on Sunday at the American Bank Center. Rayz forward Ryan Carter scored a pair of goals, including the tying tally with less than a minute to go in regulation as Corpus ended the Bucks franchise record seven game road winning streak. Overall the Bucks have recorded a standings point in the last seven games, going 5-0-2. Laredo is a Southern Conference best 27-9-4 with 58 points and they lead the Southeast Division by nine points over Corpus Christi with two games in hand. The Bucks are currently on a six game road trip. Laredo returns home on Friday, February 9th, against the Arizona Sundogs. The Bucks are offering season tickets starting at $125 dollars. Laredo came out absolutely smoking. At 3:25 forward Serge Dube scooped up a pass in front and lifted it home top shelf for his 11th of the season making it 1-0 Bucks. Just 19 seconds later forward Leo Thomas swept in the rebound of his own shot for his 12th of the year and a 2-0 lead. At 5:03 forward Igor Agarunov buried a snap shot from the slot for a 3-0 lead. For Agarunov it was his 14th of the season, matching his career high, and was the third Bucks goal in the span of 1:38. Corpus Christi spent a timeout trying to settle down and get back in the game. The Rayz got on the scoreboard on a power play chance at 12:36 when forward Kevin Watters backhanded the puck home low stick side.
In the second period both teams tried a different approach. Rayz forward Jason Baird and Bucks forward Jeff Bes were chopping at each other behind the play. Barid was eventually penalized and sent to the penalty box. Bucks defenseman Kris Mallette then went over to yell at Baird. Baird opened the penalty box door and invited Mallette into the box and things escalated from there. After they were eventually separated, Mallette was being led off the ice to the tunnel which passed by the Rayz bench. Corpus Christi forward Blair Stayzer was leaning over the bench yelling at Mallette, who went after Stayzer. Stayzer came onto the ice and things continued to increase in volatility.
During all this Rayz goalie Ron Vogel came the length of the ice and went after Bucks goalie Eric Marvin. Then Laredo forward Neil Clark got in a fight with Corpus forward Adam Powell.
After things appeared to settle down, Baird was led off the ice, but on his way he went after Bucks defenseman Paul Elliott.
When the gloves and sticks stopped flying Baird, Vogel and Powell were ejected along with Marvin, Clark and Mallette.
Tensions continued to skyrocket as first Corpus was awarded a two man advantage later in the period, then the Bucks were given two separate two-man opportunities.
The Bucks started the third period with an early power play goal as forward Chris Korchinski slammed home a centering feed for his 17th of the season just 60 seconds into the frame to make it 4-1. After the Rayz were whistled for a penalty, Corpus head coach Ken McRae was called for an additional unsportsmanlike and began heaving water bottles on the ice leading to his ejection.
Corpus began their comeback as forward Justin Quenville scored on a wrist shot at 13:02 to get the Rayz within two goals. Then Carter swept in a loose puck at 17:45 to make it 4-3. With the Bucks shorthanded and the Rayz having pulled the goalie for the extra attacker Carter scored again on a wild scramble with just 58 seconds left to tie the game.
In overtime each team had three shots and Bes hit the post, but neither could score. The game headed to a shootout. In the shootout Thomas scored for the Bucks, but Quenville and forward Derrick McIver scored to win it for Corpus Christi. FINAL SCORE Corpus Christi 5, Laredo 4 in a shootout.
Marvin stopped 12 of 13 shots in 28:18 and did not factor in the decision. Kevin Reiter played the last 36:42 for Laredo allowing three goals on 22 shots, including five of seven in the shootout, and fell to 8-2-1. Vogel allowed three goals on 18 shots in 28:18 and did not get the decision. Brent Zelenewich stopped 11 of 12 shots, including six of seven in the shootout and got the win to improve to 9-7-2.
The Bucks were 1-11 on the power play, while Corpus Christi went 2-8. The Rayz out shot Laredo 36-30.
