Connecticut Sun News Release

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (August 15, 2012) - The Connecticut Sun will present Rebecca Lobo with the inaugural Margo Dydek Award as part of its celebration of Inspiring Women, which will take place during the game against the New York Liberty at Mohegan Sun Arena on August 18th at 7 p.m.

A former UConn star who guided the Huskies to their first National Championship in 1995, Lobo went on to play for the New York Liberty and Houston Comets before finishing her WNBA career with the Connecticut Sun in 2003, helping launch the franchise in its first season. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, and currently works as an analyst and reporter for ESPN.

"I am very honored to receive the inaugural Margo Dydek Award," Lobo said. "Margo was an awe-inspiring woman who I was fortunate enough to compete against, and also cover as a television analyst. She was an inspiration to countless women and I am thrilled to be associated with her."

The centerpiece of the Inspiring Women Program, the Margo Dydek Award is named in honor of the former Connecticut Sun All Star who died unexpectedly at the age of 37 on May 27, 2011. Dydek was an accomplished professional who finished her WNBA career as the all-time leader in blocks, but she was better known for a warm and open spirit that endeared her to so many women's basketball fans around the world. The Margo Dydek Award will be presented annually to one woman who reflects those qualities.

"Nobody exemplifies the spirit of Margo better than Rebecca," Connecticut Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. "The way she conducts herself personally and professionally as a mother and role model provides an example for all of us."

Lobo will be honored along with Joanne Kasprzak, Chris Gullotta and Dr. Linda Spoonster Schwartz - the first members of the Connecticut Sun's Women of Inspiration program. As the Margo Dydek Award winner, Lobo will receive a check for $1,000 from the Connecticut Sun Foundation to donate to her favorite charity. She has selected the RuthAnn and Rebecca Lobo Scholarship in Allied Health and Nursing.
