UNCASVILLE, Conn. (April 5, 2010) - The Connecticut Sun announced today it will partner with The Arc of New London County, with the goal of improving public awareness of disability issues while also advocating for full inclusion of people with intellectual and related disabilities in Southeastern Connecticut.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to create a long-term partnership with Arc of New London County," Connecticut Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. "The service and support Arc of New London County provides makes our community better and stronger. It gives people with disabilities a better chance to lead productive and happy lives."

Arc of New London County was established in 1952 by parents of children with intellectual disabilities to serve the citizens of New London County. Its mission is to provide individualized support, services, and advocacy to persons with intellectual and other related developmental disabilities, and to help facilitate their full participation and inclusion in the communities of Southeastern Connecticut.

"As recently as the 1970s, schools were not always obligated by law to provide educational services to students with special needs," says Kathleen Stauffer, executive director of The Arc of New London County. "Success in the face of obstacles is familiar to both of us. Now - together - we can celebrate progress. The Sun's support is heartfelt in its underscoring of community inclusion, and we are appreciative."

The Sun have long been recognized for an extensive Community Relations program that includes a variety of public outreach initiatives such as Thanksgiving with Thames River Family Program. The Connecticut Sun Foundation also awards a $10,000 Bright Horizons Scholarship each year, and it provides support for a wide array of athletic and educational endeavors.

To tip off the partnership, Sun players will meet and greet visitors from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Arc's Third Annual Pirate Party fundraiser on April 24, 2010 at the Mystic Arts Center. The Sun also will provide memorabilia for the Party's silent auction.

The Arc will seek to raise awareness about issues of disability at an upcoming Arc Night hosted by the team. The Sun will further enjoy preferred partnership status among The Arc of New London County's membership, its staff, participants and families. The Arc will provide web links for the Sun and celebrate the new partnership on an Arc of New London County transportation van. Arc families and participants will enjoy reduced-price tickets and a welcoming and affirming environment at Sun games.

The Connecticut Sun will open its eighth season at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday, May 15th by hosting the Chicago Sky at 3:30 p.m. Season tickets and mini-plans are on sale now, and can be reserved by calling The Connecticut Sun Sales Department at 1.877.SUN.TIXX (786-8499) or by visiting www.connecticutsun.com.
