Connecticut Sun News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (February 28, 2012) - The Connecticut Sun announced today it has signed free agent Sidney Spencer to a two-year contract.
Terms were not disclosed.
"We need a player on our team who understands the nuances of changing roles coming off the bench," coach Mike Thibault said of the 6-foot-3 forward. "There are nights when she could play a lot, and nights when she might not play, depending upon the matchups, and she understands that role."
Originally selected out of Tennessee by the Los Angeles Sparks with the 25th overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft, Spencer has played five seasons in the league, making 24 starts in 144 games for the Sparks, New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury. She averaged a career-best 9.6 points per game as a rookie, and she is a 41.8-percent shooter from three-point range. That ability to step out and make long distance shots has created match-up issues for opposing defenses throughout her career.
"She can shoot the three and she can play three and four (small and power forward), so she forces defenses to make uncomfortable decisions because of her shooting ability," Thibault said of Spencer, who helped lead the Lady Vols to an NCAA Championship in 2007. "She's a great chemistry player who understands team above everything else. She's got leadership ability, and she enhances team chemistry because of her understanding of the little things that go into winning."
Spencer joins Mistie Mims - signed earlier this month -- on the Sun roster. Like Spencer, Mims is a veteran 6-foot-3 forward known for both her flexibility and leadership skills. The two are expected to provide the Sun with an array of options coming off the bench.
The Sun will open their 10th season on May 19th at New York, and will return home to host the Liberty the next day at Mohegan Sun Arena at 5 p.m.
