TUCSON, ARIZONA - The Tucson Sugar Skulls signed the first players for the new franchise with a local product and an all-league defensive back.
Robert Metz, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound linebacker and a product of Canyon Del Oro High School, joins the Sugar Skulls after two seasons with the IFL's Green Bay Blizzard. He was named to the All-IFL second team defense last season and was named defensive player of the week in week 14.
Metz was a team captain at Dixie State University and recorded 217 career tackles, the second highest total in school history. He currently is a volunteer assistant coach at Canyon Del Oro coaching inside linebackers.
The Sugar Skulls also have signed Dee Maggitt Jr., a 5-10, 185-pound defensive back and kick returner. Maggitt was named to the 2016 All-IFL second team defense while playing for the Tri-Cities Fever where he had seven interceptions while appearing in 11 games. He was a starting defensive back and kick returner for the Iowa Barnstormers in 2017.
Maggitt played four years at the University of Hawaii playing in 44 games. He played in all 13 games as a senior and started four.
"We are off to a great start in acquiring the type of talent that will have us competing for a championship from the outset," said Sugar Skulls Head Coach Marcus Coleman. "We're focused on players who we know will meet our standards for hard work and mental toughness on an off the field."
Also signed by the Sugar Skulls this week were:
Carlos Anderson, 6-0, 190 pounds, defensive back. Was a track athlete at Portland State University running the 200-meter dash and on the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams. He also was a triple jumper. Played in 2016 and 2017 with the Kansas City Phantoms of the Champions Indoor Football league.
