Strome Named Finalist For Rookie of the Year
March 4, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
LUBBOCK â The Lubbock Cotton Kings' Anders Strome has been nominated for the CHL's Rookie of the Year.
Strome is tied with Paul Fioroni for the team lead in points (23-24=47) and has eight goals and 14 points in 19 games since joining the Kings. Currently, he leads all CHL rookies in goals and is behind Colorado's Karlis Zirnis (19-36=55) in the points race.
The Central Hockey League will have the results of the voting for Most Valuable Player, Scott Brower Memorial Trophy (Most Outstanding Goaltender), Most Outstanding Defenseman and Rookie of the Year this next week.
This all happened when Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kirk Tomlinson announced a blockbuster trade in late January between the Kings and the Wichita Thunder.
The Kings sent forward Joe Blaznek to the Thunder for forward Anders Strome and American defenseman Alex Todd.
Strome was the Central Hockey League's rookie scoring leader at the time with 15 goals and 33 points in 40 games with the Thunder. Todd has 10 points and 103 penalty minutes in 39 games as a defenseman.
"We are building right now," said Tomlinson. "Both of these players are 6-3 and well over 200 pounds. I was really impressed with their talent when we saw them in Wichita and then at home this January. They are young and exciting players."
The Kings will host Rio Grande Valley Friday night at 7:05 p.m. for their first of two meetings in five days. The Kings will face the Amarillo Gorillas in their last meeting of the season at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be picked up at Select-a-Seat locations or by calling 806.747.PUCK (7825).
The Kings Mac-a-roni Fund will have four unique specialty jerseys that Fioroni, Dave MacIntyre, Craig Binns and Russ Guzior â all veterans â will wear during the warm-up this next Thursday when the Kings host the San Angelo Saints.
