Kearney, NE. - The 2021 NHL Draft is one week away and will be conducted virtually for the second straight year. The opening round of this year's draft will begin at 7:00pm CT on Friday, July 23rd and will be broadcast on ESPN2. The remaining rounds of the 2021 NHL Draft will take place beginning at 10:00am CT on Saturday, July 24th and will be broadcast on NHL Network. Fifty former Storm players have been selected in the NHL Draft, including six last year. A complete list of Tri-City's NHL Draft picks can be found online at https://www.stormhockey.com/nhldraft.
In May, the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau released its Final Rankings of prospects eligible for the NHL Draft. Five players from Tri-City's 2020-2021 team were identified in the rankings. Former Storm players and future prospects were also included. A player not ranked by the service may still be drafted by a member club provided the player is eligible to be drafted.
Guillaume Richard, 18, Defenseman, of Cap-Santé, Québec appeared in fifty-one games with the Storm from 2019-2021 after being drafted 91st overall by Tri-City in the 2019 USHL Phase I Draft. He scored two goals and recorded fourteen assists during his Storm career. Richard is Tri-City's highest ranked defenseman and highest ranked player in the Final Rankings ahead of the 2021 NHL Draft. Richard is ranked 32nd among skaters from North America in the rankings.
Matthew Knies, 18, Forward, of Phoenix, Arizona appeared in ninety games with the Storm from 2018-2021 after being drafted 38th overall by Tri-City in the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft. He scored thirty-one goals and notched fifty-six assists during his Storm career. Knies is Tri-City's highest ranked forward in the Final Rankings ahead of the 2021 NHL Draft. Knies is ranked 37th among skaters from North America in the rankings.
Hunter Strand, 18, Forward, of Anchorage, Alaska appeared in fifty-one games with the Storm from 2020-2021 after being drafted 2nd overall by Tri-City in the 2020 USHL Phase II Draft. He scored twenty goals and notched twenty-nine assists during his Storm career. Strand led Tri-City in scoring with forty-nine points recorded during the 2020-2021 regular season. Strand is ranked 55th among skaters from North America in the rankings.
Carter Mazur, 19, Forward, of Jackson, Michigan appeared in ninety-five regular season games with the Storm from 2018-2021 after being drafted 3rd overall by Tri-City in the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft. He scored twenty-six goals and notched thirty-one assists during his Storm career. Mazur led Tri-City with twenty goals netted during the 2020-2021 regular season. Mazur is ranked 67th among skaters from North America in the rankings.
Chase Clark, 19, Goaltender, of Williamsville, New York appeared in three regular season games with the Storm during the 2020-2021 regular season. He was drafted by Tri-City 39th overall in the 3rd Round of the 2021 USHL Phase II Draft after serving as an Emergency Backup Goaltender for the Storm during the final games of the regular season and during the 2021 Clark Cup Playoffs. Clark is ranked 23rd among goaltenders from North America in the rankings.
