Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Blaze and Storm went scoreless into extras, but it was Lake Elsinore to score first, and last, as the Storm took the opener 2-0 on Wednesday night.

The battle of the starters was truly one to behold. Tim Crabbe got the start for Bakersfield, and he scattered 5 singles over 7 innings, striking out 8. Lake Elsinore's Nick Schmidt was only a hair better - he went an additional inning, giving up just 2 hits and a walk in 8 frames while also fanning 8.

After 2 scoreless relief innings from Clayton Shunick, the game blasted into the 10th, still deadlocked at zero. Derrik Lutz (L, 1-1) was called upon to continue the pitching dominance, and it looked like the righty might be able to work around a leadoff error. However, with 2 down in the frame, Eddy Rodriguez launched a 2-run shot over the wall in left, and the Storm took a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Blaze got back-to-back line drive singles from Brodie Greene and Alex Buchholz, but Carlos Mendez failed to get a sacrifice bunt down, and 2 grounders brought the game to a somewhat anticlimactic close. Aaron Breit pitched the 9th to get his first win for the Storm, and Jason Ray collected save number 7, escaping a 10th inning jam to lock it down.

The series continues tomorrow with TAILGATE THURSDAY at the park, featuring half price beer and live music starting at 6:30pm! The game can be heard live on BakersfieldBlaze.com, with play by play voice Dan Besbris getting going at 7:35pm for the pregame show, first pitch at 7:45.
