(LANCASTER, CA) - Austin Wates went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and David Flores belted a three-run home runs and drove in four runs as the JetHawks defeated Inland Empire 11-6 at Clear Channel Stadium Wednesday night.
The JetHawks seized the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Singleton drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Flores smacked a three-run homer over the left-center field wall off 66ers starter Manuel Flores.
After the two teams traded runs in the second, Lancaster scored twice in the bottom of the third on an two-run single by Jonathan Meyer, which extended the lead to 7-1.
But the 66ers struck for four runs in the top of the fourth. David Harris hit a solo home run off JetHawks starter Bobby Doran and reliever Mike Ness gave up a two-run blast to Jon Karcich.
Ness (4-4) settled down and tossed four and 1/3 innings. The right-hander allowed six hits and three earned runs and picked up the win in relief. Lancaster tacked on four runs in the top of the sixth. Miguel Arrendell scored on a sacrifice bunt which resulted in a four-base throwing error by Flores. Singleton ripped an RBI double into the left field corner and David Flores drove in Singleton with a sacrifice fly.
Flores (10-8) took the loss after allowing 12 hits and 11 runs, six of which were earned, in five and 1/3 innings of work.
With the win, the JetHawks improved to 14-25 in the second half and 42-67 overall. Inland Empire fell to 19-19 in the second half and 51-57 overall.
The JetHawks will aim for a second straight win when the two teams meet Thursday night at 7. Right-hander Jake Buchanan (5-6, 3.93 ERA) gets the start for Lancaster while Inland Empire is expected to counter with right-hander Johnny Hellweg (3-4, 4.48 ERA).
