Storm Soar over Lincoln in Preseason Opener

DULUTH, Minn. - Trevor Moore, Joel L'Esperance and Tim Lappin scored goals while goaltenders Mike Santaguida and Markus Due-Boje combined to keep Lincoln scoreless through 60 minutes.

After a scoreless first period, Moore scored a power play goal to give Tri-City the lead when he took a pass from L'Esperance in the center of the slot and put it past Lincoln netminder Michael Bitzer.

The Storm carried that lead into the third period and used the momentum from a Brian Ward fight to extend their lead. Lincoln forward Ross Olsson took a penalty for checking from behind seconds before he fought Ward and on the ensuing power play, L'Esperance deflected a shot from the point by Nolan Gluchowski into the back of the net.

With the two-goal lead, Tri-City sealed the victory on an empty net goal by Tim Lappin.

The Storm dominated special teams play, going 2-4 on the power play and holding the Stars scoreless when they had the extra man. The Tri-City penalty killing unit was a perfect 7-7.

The Storm will now play in the championship game of the Clyde Iron Cup against either Sioux City or Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The regular season opens on September 28 when the Storm travel to face the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Tri-City will host Sioux City on October 5 in their home opener at the Viaero Event Center. The Storm scratched forwards Michael Vecchione, Tayler Munson, Jared Linnell, Jason Cotton and Grant Opperman. Goaltenders Philip Lehr and Christian Frey also did not dress for the game...The Tri-City Storm started their preseason schedule off with a 3-0 shutout win over state rival Lincoln in the opening game of the Clyde Iron Cup on Friday at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center.
