Lake Elsinore Storm News Release
The Lake Elsinore Storm has begun its annual Reading for Rewards program in local elementary schools. The program, now in its fifth year, was developed to teach students about the importance of reading and staying in school by rewarding their reading efforts with free tickets to Storm games.
The program, presented in 2004 by The Riverside County Office of Education, began January 26 and will run through February 25. Members of the Storm front office, along with Storm mascot "Thunder," will be visiting participating schools to talk to students about the importance of reading in education. The Reading for Rewards program will reach over 30 schools and over 35,000 students in the greater Riverside County.
"Reading is a critical building block for student success. We deeply appreciate this collaborative effort with the Storm," said Dr. David Long, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools. "The willingness of a franchise such as the Storm baseball team is a true model for the community to follow on behalf of children."
As part of the program, the Storm will put on a performance of Ernest Thayer's celebrated "Casey at the Bat" poem with student participation. Upon completion of the presentation, Storm bookmarks will be distributed to each student for them to keep track of the books they are reading. Once a student has read ten books, he/she may return the bookmark in exchange for two complimentary tickets to a Storm game of his/her choice. The team will also be performing "Casey's Revenge" at select schools that have participated in previous years.
The Storm's Reading for Rewards program was established prior to the 2000 season. Since its inception, the program has grown from fewer than ten schools to its present participation of 35,000 students and over 30 schools in the greater Riverside County.
Schools looking to participate in this year's program may still have the opportunity to take part by reserving bookmarks for their students pending availability. School officials should contact Storm representative Corrine Roberge at (909) 245-4487 x242 for more information and availability. For more information on participating schools and appearance dates and times, please contact Jon Fusco at extension 223.
The Storm celebrated its tenth anniversary season with a fourth consecutive playoff berth in 2003. Season tickets, mini-plans and group discounts for the 2004 season are now on sale. For more information, contact the Storm at (909) 245-4487 or visit them online at www.stormbaseball.com.
