Kearney, Neb. - Tri-City Storm defenseman and Assistant Captain Joey Matthews has announced his commitment to Dartmouth College, the 17th active Storm player to earn an NCAA Division I commitment.

A native of Columbia, Illinois, Matthews won the 2016 Clark Cup with the Storm and played in all 11 playoff games. This season, the 5-foot-10, 184-lb. blueliner has scored one goal and two points in ten games.

"Joey has been a really good leader for us and is a tremendous competitor," said Storm Head Coach and General Manager Bill Muckalt. "He has improved so much since he's gotten to Tri-City. We are excited to continue working with him to get him ready to play college hockey."

Matthews' improvement started within his first few months with the Storm in 2015-16; after missing five of the first six regular season games, Matthews skated in 63 of the final 65 contests. He finished the regular season with two goals and ten points in 53 games.

A product of the St. Louis AAA Blues, Matthews captained the U16 team in 2013-14. In his final season with the AAA team, Matthews contributed seven goals and 30 points in 32 games.

After being named Storm Assistant Captain at the start of the season, Muckalt said, "to me, Joey Matthews brings a never-say-die attitude. He's worked for everything he's gotten here and his role has continued to increase. He's worked hard every day to make himself better . We really value what he brings to our locker room on and off the ice."

Tri-City has had 198 players commit to NCAA institutions. Seven have played for the Storm while committed to Dartmouth; Matthews, Collin Rutherford (TC: 2015-16), Grant Opperman (TC: 2011-13), Brad Schierhorn (TC: 2010-12), Rick Pinkston (TC: 2008-11), Troy Mattila (TC: 2007-08) and Danny Markowitz (TC: 2006-07). Opperman is a Big Green Assistant Captain this season and Schierhorn captained Dartmouth in 2015-16.
