Storm allow two goals in final period, lose 4-3

KEARNEY, Neb. - Led by two goals and one assist from Jake Chelios, the Chicago Steel (18-22-5, 41 pts) defeated the Tri-City Storm (23-19-6, 52 pts) 4-3 on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center. It was the first loss at home for the Storm in the month of February.

The Storm got off to a good start, as Radoslav Illo scored the opening goal at the 5:36 mark in the first period. Matt Johnson picked the assist on Illo's 18th goal of the season.

Cody Murphy extended the Storm lead to 2-0 at the 17:18 mark in the first period, as Kenny Brooks picked up the single assist.

Chicago would get on the board with 1:24 left in the opening period with a goal from Chelios.

Chelios would score short-handed in the second period to tie the game at 2-2 at 1:57 mark into the period.

Jaden Schwartz would give the Storm the lead back at the 14:51 mark in the second period with his 26th goal of the season. Anthony DeCenzo and Brett Mohler would pick of the assists on the goal.

In the third period, the Steel's Richard Coyne scored the tying goal at the 8:10 mark in the period on a quick transition started by Chelios and Cole Gunner.

A minute and 13-seconds after the Coyne goal, Chicago was awarded a penalty-shot as the puck was covered by the Storm's Michael Montrose in the goalie crease. Billy Latta would score on Storm goalie Carsen Chubak, as Latta netted the game-winner with 10:47 left in the game.

Chubak (16-14-6) received the loss for the Storm with 21 saves on 25 shots. Connor Wilson (9-5-4) made 29 saves on 32 shots in the win for the Steel.

Tri-City on the power play was 0-for-4, while Chicago was 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.

The Storm are still six points back of third place Sioux Falls and are 11 points in front of fifth place Sioux City in the West Division standings.

The Storm are back host Chicago again on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center. Tri-City is in the midst of a four-game home stand with Youngstown coming to town next weekend.
