Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Jim Haley had three hits and Paul Campbell turned in another terrific outing Monday as the Charlotte Stone Crabs took down the Daytona Tortugas 6-2 at Charlotte Sports Park.
Campbell (4-3) allowed just one earned run on three hits over five innings, striking out four to get the win. He escaped jams in the fourth and seventh to maintain narrow one-run leads for Charlotte (19-18).
Monday's victory gets the Stone Crabs above five-hundred for the first time all season.
In a scoreless game in the bottom of the second, Moises Gomez got the Stone Crabs' offense rolling with a single to right. After a Vidal Brujan base hit, Carl Chester drove an RBI double to the wall in left to make it 1-0 Charlotte. Two batters later, Thomas Milone pushed across Brujan with a sacrifice fly to center to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Tortugas (18-18) cut the gap to 2-1 in the fourth, but the Stone Crabs responded in the fourth. After Brujan walked and stole second, Haley shot a single up the middle to make it 3-1 Stone Crabs.
Daytona added a run in the seventh on a Yonathan Mendoza groundout, but Campbell made a difficult play on a dribbler to maintain the lead.
Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Haley led off the inning with a single to right. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Ronaldo Hernandez grounded a two-run single to right to make it 5-2. Hernandez then scored on a balk to cap the rally at 6-2.
Haley is now 11-for-25 with two extra-base hits and 7 RBI over his last six games.
The Stone Crabs will look to clinch at least a split of the four-game set with Daytona on 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Michael Plassmeyer (0-0, 0.00) will be on the mound for Charlotte, against Ryan Lillie (0-3, 4.00) of the Tortugas. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
