St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets let an 8-0 lead slip away as the Charlotte Stone Crabs roared back for an 11-9 win on Tuesday at Charlotte Sports Park.
The Mets committed four errors that led to five unearned runs. Two errors in the bottom of the eighth on Luis Guillorme at short and Vinny Siena at second base let in three runs that turned a one-run Crabs deficit into a two-run lead.
The Mets jumped all over starter Chris Pike in the first three innings with eight runs and 10 hits. In that span the Mets got a two-run double from Jhoan Urena and a two-run single from Vinny Siena.
Mets starter Andrew Church only needed 14 pitches, all strikes, to retire the first seven batters he faced. However, he threw 33 more pitches in the third inning while recording just one more out. The Stone Crabs tagged him for four runs in the frame to make it 8-4.
An error in the fifth opened the door for the Crabs to get two runs on a RBI double by Justin Williams and a run-scoring ground out from Mac James that made it 8-6.
John Mora walked to start the sixth and he ended up scoring on a wild pitch to put the Mets up 9-6.
Paul Paez surrendered back-to-back two-out RBI singles in the seventh before being lifted. Mike Hepple struck out Grant Kay to strand two runners and keep the Mets up 9-8.
Hepple started the bottom of the eighth with a four-pitch walk and was lifted for closer Corey Taylor. Brandon Guyer greeted Taylor with a double. Then Taylor walked Riley Unroe to load the bases. With the infield drawn in, Alec Sole hit a grounder to Guillorme at short. Guillorme's throw home to prevent the tying run sailed high. Justin Williams broke the tie with a hard ground ball that ate up Siena at second and let two runs in.
Wuilmer Becerra cracked a two-out double in the top of the ninth but it was too little, too late for the Mets comeback. Becerra's doubled ended a streak of 11 straight batters retired by relievers Jose Alvarado and Brian Miller.
Champ Stuart, Siena and Becerra had two hits apiece. Both of Becerra's hits were doubles.
Urena had three hits for the second straight day.
Next Up: The Mets (37-36, 2-4) and Stone Crabs (36-39, 3-3) play the middle game of their three-game series at Charlotte Sports Park on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
