Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Scott Kingery collected three of the Threshers four hits on Tuesday, but Clearwater was held off the board by Ismael Guillon and company in a 3-0 loss to the Daytona Tortugas at Bright House Field.
Daytona (4-2) took the series two games to one. Eight of the nine contests between the two teams this year have been decided by three runs or less.
John Richy delivered a solid start for Clearwater (4-2), turning in his longest outing of the season.
The right-hander retired the first six men he faced, and 12 of the first 13 Tortugas to bat. He would give the Threshers a season-high 6.1 innings, permitting three runs on seven hits and a walk, finishing with 80 pitches, 54 for strikes.
The only blemish for Richy (2-3) through the first four innings was a Ty Washington solo homer that led off the third.
Down 1-0 in the fifth, Aristides Aquino opened the frame with a double to center, and would score on a Tanner Rahier base hit up the first base line to make it 2-0 Tortugas.
Ismael Guillon (2-2) turned in a season-long six innings for Daytona, holding Clearwater to just three hits.
All three of those knocks belonged to Kingery.
The Threshers second baseman lined a single to left in the first, beat out an infield hit in the third, and pulled a base knock to left in the sixth inning. Kingery was hit by a pitch by reliever Alex Powers in the eighth before swiping his 20th base of the season.
Daytona's final tally came in the seventh. Washington walked, stole second, and went to third on an error by catcher Austin Bossart before Garrett Boulware's double to left made it 3-0.
Matt Hockenberry was greeted by a Jonathan Reynoso infield hit, but worked his way around a jam with two men on and just one out. Hockenberry struck out Ronald Bueno looking on a fastball, then got Blake Trahan out swinging at a curve ball to end the inning.
Jesen Therrien hurled a scoreless ninth, permitting a one-out single but rolling up a double play off the bat of Boulware.
The Threshers will continue their eight-game homestand when they welcome in the Dunedin Blue Jays on Wednesday for a 12 p.m. first pitch. Francisco Rios (3-3) is on the mound for Dunedin, while Clearwater counters will Yacksel Rios (2-1). All the action will be broadcast live on the Threshers Broadcast Network beginning at 11:45 a.m.
