Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (August 11, 2014) - The Hammerheads knew the situation all too well when the Stone Crabs loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth. Maxx Tissenbaum had just brought the crowd at Charlotte Sports Park back to its feet after an RBI single got Charlotte within a run at 3-2. When it was all over, all nine batters came to the plate and four runs were used to erase a 3-1 deficit as the Stone Crabs rallied for the second time in three nights to defeat the Hammerheads 5-3 for the three game sweep.
After firing five scoreless innings for the win in his Florida State League debut against the Cardinals last week, Jaime Schultz had a rude awakening on Monday night. Three straight singles to begin the top of the first, including the final blow from Matt Juengel, immediately gave Jupiter a 1-0 lead. Schultz worked through it, and retired the next three hitters consecutively to retire the side with only one run in.
He shouldered aside a pair of two out singles from Noah Perio and Justin Bohn in the second before walking two batters during his final inning in the third. His 76th and final pitch came to Jesus Solorzano, who went down swinging, giving Schultz three strikeouts in the inning. He was fortunate to leave with the game tied once the Stone Crabs came through with two outs in the third against Hammerheads starter Austin Brice. Tommy Coyle was hit with a pitch before stealing second for the second time off catcher Chad Wallach. Johnny Field then drew a walk before Tissenbaum lashed a game-tying single through the right side.
Following a stint in the Gulf Coast League, Nick Sawyer made his return to the mound at Charlotte Sports Park for the first time in two months. During his only inning in the fourth, he walked number eight hitter Blake Barber, who eventually got to second on a wild pitch. Bohn's third single scored the run and gave Jupiter the lead once more at 2-1.
That score held until the eighth thanks to six stellar innings from Brice, who struck out a career-high 10 batters. Kevin Brandt was nearly as impressive out of the `Crabs bullpen with three scoreless innings, including retiring the last seven hitters he faced. Jupiter capitalized against Jose Molina courtesy of doubles from Cody Keefer and Barber which added to the lead and made it a 3-1 ballgame. However, the Stone Crabs came back scorching in the bottom half after Brian Ellington used just seven pitches to pick up the three outs in the home seventh.
Coyle and Field went back-to-back with singles which placed the tying runs at the corners with nobody out. Tissenbaum brought in his second run with a base hit into center, and Patrick Leonard's flare into the same spot loaded the bases with no outs. Hammerheads manager Brian Schneider then called upon Blake Logan to work out of the jam. A 2-1 pitch to Josh Sale, Saturday night's hero, was skied deep to left for a scoring flyball to tie it up at three. Tyler Goeddel then took a 1-2 pitch to straightaway center over the head of Ryan Goetz for an RBI double and a 4-3 advantage. An intentional walk to Ariel Soriano reloaded the bases and following a strikeout, Logan got Granden Goetzman to produce a grounder to the shortstop Bohn. He raced in but his throw to first wasn't in time, giving Goetzman an infield single and an RBI. Zach Cooper came out to pitch his third scoreless inning of the series with a perfect ninth for his fifth save, which included a pair of strikeouts.
The homestand continues on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM when the Stone Crabs play host to the Palm Beach Cardinals for the start of a three-game series.
