
Stingrays Bolster Roster with Signing of Forward Sergio Somma

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 23 seasons in the Lowcountry and proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), have agreed to terms with forward Sergio Somma, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today.
Somma, 28, enjoyed a strong first two professional seasons with the Augsburg Panther in Germany's top professional league, the DEL. In Somma's rookie season in 2011-2012, he scored 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists) in 44 games, and the following year with Augsburg, he scored 29 points (18 goals, 11 assists) in 52 games. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native was also a member of the 2011 U.S. Men's Select Team that competed in the Deutschland Cup in Munich, Germany.
The 5-foot-9, 188-pound forward moved to Sweden for the 2013-2014 season, but returned to Germany with the Rosenheim Star Bulls last season, scoring 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) in only 37 games.
Somma graduated from Ohio State University and served as the Buckeyes captain during his senior season in 2010-2011. In his NCAA career, Somma tallied 104 points (54 goals, 50 assists) in 159 games. His debut with the Stingrays will mark his return to North American hockey for the first time since 2011, when he made his professional debut with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL). With the Wolves, Somma skated in five games, scoring a goal and an assist.
