South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forward Anthony Collins. In keeping with club policy, details of the agreement were not disclosed.
Collins, 23, enters his second professional campaign after appearing in 35 games with the Mississippi Surge of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) last season scoring two goals and four assists for six points and adding 130 penalty minutes (PIM). Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound native of Surry, British Columbia, skated four seasons of junior hockey from 2006-10 with eight teams totaling 121 points (53 goals, 68 assists) and 465 PIM. Collins briefly appeared in the college ranks with Thompson Rivers University in Canada in 2010-11 before departing overseas to play with Gnesta IK of Division 1 in Sweden.
"Anthony is a young pro that comes to us after spending his rookie season in Mississippi last season," said Carbery. "I have heard good things about the way he approaches the game and his understanding of his role. He's a hard player to play against that can create space all over the ice, all while being able to establish our forecheck and puck possession in the offensive zone. He has a great opportunity to take the next step in his career with our organization."
The Stingrays kick off their 21st season of hockey in the Lowcountry on Saturday, October 19 against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. in Reading, Pennsylvania and celebrate Opening Night, Stingrays Alumni Game, Zooperstars! and 2013-14 schedule giveaway presented by Savage Law Firm at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, October 26 against their in-state rivals, the Greenville Road Warriors, at 7:05 p.m.
