Sarnia Sting News Release
The Sarnia Sting visited the Saginaw Spirit on Thursday evening.
It was a true defensive battle between Sting goaltender Ethan Langevin and Spirit netminder Ivan Prosvetov. Both goalies were outstanding throughout the night.
In the first period, Saginaw forward Jake Goldowski struck first. Goldowski drove the net and was found with a back door pass from linemate DJ Busdeker. Midway through the opening period, the Spirit held a 1-0 lead.
Returning to the Sting lineup tonight was second-year forward Jamieson Rees. Out since September 29 with injury, Rees played a strong game that included numerous scoring chances. Rees nearly snuck one by Prosvetov after some nifty stickhandling late in the first.
Moving into the second period, the Sting continued to pressure. Despite outshooting the Spirit nineteen to seven in the middle frame, we couldn't get on the board just yet. Sarnia forward Hugo Leufvenius wired one off the iron, but Prosvetov continued to stymie Sting shooters. After two, it was still a 1-0 game.
In the third, Spirit rookie forward Cole Perfetti doubled the home side's lead to 2-0.
Leufvenius responded just three minutes later. With the Sting on the powerplay, Leufvenius fired a snipe from between the circles past Prosvetov. It marked an incredible nine consecutive games with goals for Leufvenius.
Though the Sting kept up the heat on Prosvetov throughout the remainder of the third, Saginaw's goalie was certainly on his game. Tonight's final score was 2-1 for the Spirit.
Langevin was superb in goal for the Sting while turning aside twenty-nine shots; it earned him recognition as the third-star of the game.
