LONG BEACH, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2005) - Steve Chase, the president and general manager of the American Basketball Association (ABA) Long Beach Jam since the team's creation in April 2003, has resigned his day-to-day responsibilities with the team.
Chase was the architect who put together last season's ABA Championship squad.
"I am proud of what I accomplished with this team last season," Chase said. "This season we have definitely suffered the sophomore jinx. We had a player almost lose his life in a car accident (Lenny Cooke), we had to part ways with Nate Archibald and bring in a new coach. We have had to overhaul our entire roster, and we have not won a game at home since early December."
Jam owner Tets Yamashita has contracted Chase to be the president and chief executive officer of a new group that will own basketball and baseball teams, as well as other sports marketing ventures
Among Chase's duties will be to determine which league the Jam will play in next season. "It is our wish to remain in the ABA," Chase said. "As with any new business, especially one that experiences tremendous growth, there are problems. It is our hope that the ABA will be able to create an environment of stability for us to compete in. We have great affection for the ABA brand.
Jack Lucarelli, who served as vice president of business development, will take over for Chase.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
