Odessa Jackalopes News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Zach Stern made a season high 47 saves in a 4-0 loss to the Amarillo Bulls (26-6-1-2) at the Budweiser Bull Pen on Friday night.
The Odessa Jackalopes (7-23-1-1) came into the contest with Adam Phillips serving as interim head coach following the departure of previous head coach Todd Watson. The Jackalopes fell down 1-0 on a nice passing play just under five minutes into the hockey game. That score held until just under two minutes to play in the period when Amarillo defenseman Gagik Malakyan drilled a slap-shot from the blue line to score his first of the season and increase the Amarillo lead to 2-0.
The Jackalopes had some carry-over power play time to start the second period but were unable to convert, instead it was Amarillo capitalizing on their next power play chance to take a 3-0 lead. Odessa had a few good chances to eat into the deficit and get on the scoreboard but they could not find a way to put a shot in past Amarillo goalie Charlie Glockner.
The Bulls extended their lead on a delayed penalty call, as Kyrre Hellerud scored off a shot from the slot that came with less than ten seconds to play in the period.
In the third, the Jackalopes rallied around their goaltender and did not allow a single goal against despite Amarillo putting 14 shots on net. Stern, making his fourth consecutive start, has now made 137 saves over that span. The Jackalopes, though humbled in their defeat, have a chance to get back at the Bulls on Saturday night as they play the second game of the three-game weekend series in the Texas Panhandle. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
