Stephanie Miner To Throw Season's First Pitch

Syracuse, NY--The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are pleased to announce that Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner will throw out the season's ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day, Thursday, April 8.

Miner became the first woman to be elected mayor in Syracuse's 162-year history and the first in any major city in New York when she won a three-way race to succeed Matt Driscoll on November 3, 2009. Prior to her election, Miner served as an attorney in the private sector and also was a regional representative for former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and a Syracuse common councilor-at-large. She received her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and her law degree from the University at Buffalo.

"We are thrilled that Mayor Stephanie Miner has accepted our invitation to throw out the season's ceremonial first pitch," said Chiefs President Ron Gersbacher. "It will be an honor for us to have a history-making Mayor on hand to kick off a historical season for the Chiefs franchise."

Miner will follow in the recent footsteps of Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney (2008) and United States Congressman Dan Maffei (2009) as elected officials to throw out the season's first pitch after winning an election the previous November.

Game time is slated for 2:00pm as the Chiefs will host the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A Affiliate of the two-time defending National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies) for the 50th home opener of the Syracuse franchise's community ownership era.

After losing baseball following the 1955 season and again midway through the 1957 campaign, a group of local businessmen organized a stock drive to purchase the Montreal franchise of the International League and move it to Syracuse for the 1961 season. The Community Baseball Club of Central New York, Inc. has operated the franchise in every season since; keeping baseball in what has become one of the smallest markets in all of Triple-A Baseball.
