Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

Idaho Falls - The Step Up to The Plate Capital Campaign restarted last night with the City Council's unanimous approval of an additional $400,000 towards the building of a new baseball stadium to replace McDermott Field. Last year, the city of Idaho Falls committed $2 million dollars while private donations totaled $1.35 million including $600,000 from the Melaleuca Corporation for naming rights to the stadium. However, due to rising costs and a one year delay in the construction an additional $650,000 was required to meet rising costs. With the city committing $400,000 to the project, private donations are needed to raise the final $250,000 by August 31st of this year.

In addition to the $100,000 he had previously given, Chukars owner Dave Elmore is giving an additional $50,000 leaving only $200,000 remaining to ensure that the new stadium will be built in Idaho Falls for the 2007 season. "With Chukars ownership increasing their contribution by 50%, and if every previous contributor added only 20% to their previous donation, we will have met our goal," said Chukars President and General Manager Kevin Greene.

Greene continues, "I am grateful that the Idaho Falls City Council believes in the importance of this project and unanimously agreed to help complete the funding for this great community asset." He is also thankful for the donors who have already helped the campaign get this far, "So many individuals, businesses and organizations have contributed to the Step Up to the Plate campaign over the last two years. Our efforts this summer will include contacting potential new donors as well as asking previous donors to consider an additional contribution."

Melaleuca Field would be built on the same site as McDermott Field. It would serve as home for the Idaho Falls Chukars professional baseball team and also area high school and American Legion teams. McDermott Field was built in 1976 after the previous stadium, Highland Park, burned down.
