Steelheads Use Breakout Second Period To Topple Bulldogs
October 4, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The Mississauga Steelheads capitalized on their best 20 minutes of the season to propel themselves to their first victory of the season, knocking off the Bulldogs by a 6-2 final.
The night started off on a positive note for the Hamilton Bulldogs with the returns of both goaltender Zachary Roy and center Logan Morrison and would continue with an early 1st period power-play that would see tremendous zone
time and puck control but nothing past Steelheads netminder Kai Edmonds. Payton Vescio would ring a goal post before the halfway point of the period but the opening frame was a goaltender's duel with Roy coming up big on an Adam Varga chance before Edmonds would steal a goal away from Arthur Kaliyev. The shots were 13-11 in favour of the Bulldogs but no breakthrough would come.
The second period would see the Steelheads begin to turn momentum in their favour, Roy would come up with a needed stop on a Thomas Harley bid before Max Dodig would ring the post with the Bulldogs goaltender trying to get right to left. At the 5:50 mark of the second period Cole Schwindt would find James Hardie standing all by his lonesome at the right of the Bulldogs goal to make it 1-0 for the Steelheads and it was just the beginning, at 8:03 Richard Whittaker would clean up a James Hardie rebound before Keenan Washkurak would shelf a Whittaker feed at 10:04 giving Mississauga a 3-0 lead. Jan Jenik would have a breakaway opportunity to get the Dogs back in with 9:17 left in the third but a rolling puck would find the glove of Edmonds to erase the chance. Before the period was over a bouncing puck would settle at the right point on the stick of Thomas Harley who would send a seeing eye shot through traffic to give the Steelheads a 4-0 lead after 40, a period in which they outshot the Bulldogs 24-9.
The third period would open with a Liam Ham rocket from the right point to make it 5-0 just :33 into the frame but the Bulldogs would show fight Liam Van Loon would find Arthur Kaliyev for his 3rd of the season at 1:27 and later
send Jan Jenik in alone for a brilliant one handed, backhand goal at 7:38 but that's as close as the Bulldogs would get. Max Dodig would add his 1st in the OHL at 18:14 to end the night and give the Steelheads a 6-2 victory.
The Hamilton Bulldogs return to action tomorrow night when they host the Oshawa Generals for a 7pm puck drop, and finish a 3 in 3 weekend when they host the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday at 2pm.
