Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - Three goals by the visitors in a 1:18 span early in the second period turned out to be the Steelheads' downfall, as they fell to the Wranglers, 5-2, in front of 2,569 fans at Qwest Arena on Monday night.
The Wranglers victory extends the best-of-seven series to a sixth game, which takes place on Tuesday, April 18. The Steelheads still lead the series, 3-2.
Steelheads' center Greg Rallo opened the game's scoring, netting an even-strength goal at 3:31 of the first period to put the home team in front, 1-0. Defenseman Jarad Bourassa fired a point shot that missed wide and caromed to Rallo who was stationed at the right post. From behind the goal line, the rookie was able to bank the puck off goaltender Marc Magliarditi (23 saves) for his second goal of the series. Paul Caponigri also got an assist.
Late in the stanza, the Wranglers tied the game on a Marco Peluso breakaway goal. Peluso found himself open at the Steelheads' blue line and defenseman Christian Chartier hit him with a long outlet pass. Peluso deked around goaltender Steve Silverthorn (21 saves) and slipped the puck into the open cage to tie the contest at one.
Just 1:39 into the second period the Wranglers took their first lead on an even-strength goal by Chris Neiszner. Forward Derek Edwardson found Neiszner open in the slot and he wristed a shot past Silverthorn for his third of the postseason. Peluso also assisted on the goal.
One minute and four seconds later, Dan Tudin scored a power play goal and the Wranglers led 3-1. Matt Dzieduszycki and Chartier gathered the helpers. Fourteen seconds after Tudin's tally the Wranglers grabbed a 4-1 lead. Neiszner found a loose puck in the slot and swept it past Silverthorn for his second of the game. Again, Edwardson picked up an assist, while defenseman Scott Shoneck drew the other. All told, the Wranglers scored three times in 1:18.
Midway through the second period, Marty Flichel closed the gap for the Steelheads off a pretty passing play. Flichel moved into the offensive zone and dropped the puck off to Rallo before breaking to the net. Rallo found Caponigri at the left circles and he quickly hit Flichel at the right post for a redirection over Magliarditi at 12:05 of the second period.
The only goal in the third period was an empty-net goal by the Wranglers' Todd Alexander. The unassisted, shorthanded goal came at 18:33.
For the game the Wranglers out-shot the Steelheads, 26-25. Silverthorn is now 1-1, while Magliarditi improves to 1-3.
Game Six of this series is slated for Tuesday, April 18. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck.
