Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (January 5, 2006) - The Gary Steelheads' brief two-game winning streak came to an end in Albany Thursday night, as Gary fell to the Patroons 124-118. The Steelheads fell back to .500 on the year with a 10-10 record.
Gary played without forward Randy Holcomb, who earlier in the day was signed to a 10-day contract with the Chicago Bulls. He became the 5th CBA call-up of the season. Without Holcomb, the Steelheads were outrebounded 50-41. Each team committed 18 turnovers. Albany got to the foul line 42 times, compared to 34 for the Steelheads. The Patroons outscored Gary from the foul line 33-24.
The Steelheads lost the first two quarters of this game, falling behind 63-52 at the half. Gary came back to win the third and fourth quarter, but could not fully make up the deficit. The Steelheads picked up two quarter points in the defeat.
The Steelheads were paced by guard Jimmie "Snap" Hunter, who tossed in 39 points with 6 assists. It was the third time this year that "Snap" had scored 39 points, which ranks as the third-highest single-game scoring effort in the CBA this year. Guard Eric Chatfield tossed in 21 points, while forward Edmund Saunders added 16. Center Chris Alexander added 13 points, while pacing Gary rebounders with 11 in a double-double performance.
Rookie Ronald Thompson matched Hunter for scoring honors with 39 points of his own, along with 10 assists and 6 rebounds. James Thomas added 24 points with 15 rebounds.
The Steelheads play at Albany again Friday night, before returning home for their third game in 72 hours against the Dakota Wizards at the Genesis Center. The Dakota game will air over WJOB (1230khz) in Hammond and WIMS (1420khz) in Michigan City.
