BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads announced today that the team's head coach and director of hockey operations Derek Laxdal has accepted a two-year contract extension. Laxdal, who has completed the first year of an original two-year contract, has agreed to terms that will keep him at the helm of the club's hockey operations through the 2008-09 season. Terms of the contract are undisclosed, per club policy.

Idaho Steelheads General Manager Eric Trapp said, "We are very pleased with Derek's performance. In a short amount of time he put a quality product on the ice as well as quickly became a part of our community. Successful coaches are highly sought after and we extended his contract to both keep him here and to express our confidence in his abilities to bring an ECHL championship team back to Idaho."

Under Laxdal's leadership in 2005-06, the Steelheads finished with the best regular season record (94 points, 43-21-8) since joining the ECHL in 2003.

"Idaho has been everything my family and I expected it to be in my first year coaching the Steelheads," said Laxdal. "We're excited to have the opportunity to call the Treasure Valley home for the next three years and to continue building on the success of the team on the ice and in the community."
