Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (5-5) will be making the short trip west this weekend to take on the Harrisburg Stampede (3-7) in the final round of the Keystone Classis this Saturday. The Steelhawks are coming off an overtime victory in Georgia last weekend; picking up a much needed W. Harrisburg has dropped the last three, all to National Conference opponents.
The Steelhawks had some new players step up as they battled the Fire. QB Shane McSweeny only threw for 55 yards on nine attempts but the six completions included three touchdowns, including the game winner. McSweeny leads the league with a pass efficiency rating of 116.7, as well as pass yards/completion at 13.5 avg/c. A recent addition to the Steelhawks roster, WR Chris Schubert had a break out performance hauling in six catches for 102 yards and three touchdowns. Schubert returns to familiar turf this weekend in Hershey, as he will face the team he most recently played for.
Two of Lehigh Valley's defensive leaders added their name to the teams' record books after last week. DB Dwayne Hollis (57 tackles, 2 tfl. 12 pbus) recorded his eighth interception, the most by a Steelhawk in one season and tying the all time record. DL Brandon Sutton (32 tackles, 10 tfl) picked up one sack in the game, bringing his season total to 7.5, tying him with fellow d-lineman Larry Ford for the single season high.
Harrisburg's offense relies on QB E.J. Nemeth's athletic ability to pick up yards on through the air and on the ground. He is the league leader in total offensive yards (2,404 total, 2,148 passing, 256 rushing) and offensive touchdowns (52 total, 37 passing, 15 rushing). His favorite receiver on the year has been Jerell Jones who has made 52 catches for 509 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Stampede's defense is led by DB Armar Watson (43.5 tackles, 6 ints, 7 pbus) and LB Amara Kamara (35.5 tackles, 10.5 tfl, 1 int). Kamara's 10 sacks are good for second best in the league.
This weekend's game is Saturday night at 7:00pm EST. Check for score updates on the Steelhawks Facebook and Twitter accounts. The PIFL website and Facebook page should also have updates. The Steelhawks will return to the Lehigh Valley for their final home game, and their 2014 PIFL regular season finale, for a June 28th matchup with rival Richmond Raiders. It's a huge game for both teams; the winner will claim second place in the National Conference and the final playoff spot. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night, 1,000 team photos will be given out to fans.
