Alabama Hammers News Release

The Alabama Hammers host the Columbus Lions this Saturday, June 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Von Braun Center for the Alexander Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram of Albertville Community Appreciation Night. FREE ticket vouchers are available at Alexander Dodge in Albertville along with Calhoun Community College, Alabama A&M University and all Huntsville and Madison Minuteman Food Stores. The Hammers, defending Professional Indoor Football League champions, want to say thank you to the entire Tennessee Valley for its support of the 2014 season of indoor football in Huntsville.

The Hammers (3-7) remain in the hunt for a PIFL playoff spot while facing the (5-5) Lions. Alabama must win its two final games of the regular season combined with a Georgia Fire victory over Columbus on the season's final weekend next week.

The Hammers suffered a gut-wrenching 49-47 home loss to the Trenton Freedom last week and now face a must-win situation against the Lions. "We had a chance to win in what was a classic arena football game," said Hammers' head coach Dean Cokinos of the loss last week. "We must regroup and get ready for the Lions' visit this week."

This will be the third meeting of the two squads this season with Alabama defeating Columbus 73-53 at the VBC on May 17, while the Lions returned the favor to the Hammers defeating Alabama 39-31 on June 7 in Columbus. Not only is this the "rubber match" between the two squads, but the contest is also filled with huge playoff implications for both teams. Though the Lions are second in the PIFL in scoring offense (53.9 points per game), the squad is last in total defense, which is a fact the Hammers hope to take advantage of, just as it did in the first meeting between the two squads.

The game versus the Lions will be available on the Hammers Radio Network, which is broadcast on WAFN-FM, 92.7 Fun Radio-Arab, WZZN-FM, 97.7 The Zone-Huntsville and WWIC-AM, 1050-Scottsboro. Michael St. John and Steve Moulton will handle the play-by-play.
