Steelhawks Fall on Last Play

March 26, 2012 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release

Bethlehem, PA: In a game that came down to the last play of the game, the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (2-3) fell on the road to the Bloomington Edge (4-1) 34-36 in a game that went back and forth the entire time. The score stayed close the entire game, and it took the last play of the game as time expired for the Edge to capitalize on some unfortunate Steelhawk penalties and take the lead.

The Steelhawks had the ball to start the first quarter and on the first play of the game, QB Bryan Randall (172 yds passing) hooked up with WR Jeff Willis on a 37 yd TD pass to give LV a 7-0 lead. This would be the only score of the quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, Bloomington QB Dusty Burk hit WR David Brown or an 8yd td pass. Both teams would then trade field goals, making the score tied 10-10 going into halftime.

The third quarter saw another Ryan Cain field goal for the Steelhawks and late 1 yd td run by Edge RB Andre Raymond. The action began to pick up as the third quarter wound down. Steelhawk Jesse Cooper returned a Bloomington kickoff 51 yds to give the Steelhawks a 20-16 lead.

Again, Bloomington started the fourth quarter off with a score when Raymond ran it in from 2 yds out. The Steelhawks Aaron Higdon then scored on a 5 yd run. The Steelhawks defense forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that was recovered by Marvin Johnson. Higdon reached the end zone for the second time that quarter when he caught a 28 yd Randall pass to put the Steelhawks up 34-30 with 53 seconds left. Twice the Steelhawks had the Edge stopped on fourth down to presumably end the game, but a couple controversial penalties continued the Edge final drive. With two seconds left and the last play of the game, Raymond was able to get across the goal line to end the game with the score in the Edge's favor.

The Steelhawks have a bye this week and then will visit Reading on April 7th before returning home to take on Cedar Rapids April 14th.
