PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN - The Chicago Steel scored twice in the third period to cap off a 5-3 win over Team USA U-17 Saturday night at USA Hockey Arena. Steel goaltender Reilly Herbst made 16 saves for his first career win as the Steel (7-7-1-0, 15 pts.) won their third game in a row, and fifth-straight road game in the first matchup of the season with Team USA (6-6-0-2, 14 pts.).
The Steel struck first just 14 seconds into the game thanks to right wing Mathieu De St. Phalle's first goal with the Steel. Left wing Gunnarwolfe Fontaine carried the puck into the zone with speed before finding De St. Phalle in the slot who beat USA goaltender Drew Commesso to the blocker side on the two-on-one break.
The second period featured five combined goals and started as Team USA tied things 4:40 into the second period when forward Chase Yoder tipped a pass from defenseman Tyler Kleven past the blocker of Herbst.
Chicago answered back midway through the second period with a pair of goals 1:09 apart. Left wing Robert Mastrosimone gave the Steel a 2-1 lead with his ninth goal of the season as he beat Commesso on the blocker side. Steel defenseman Matteo Pietroniro started the play with a long pass to center Adam Robbins whose immediate deflection pass sprung Mastrosimone on a partial breakaway.
Steel center Nick Abruzzese then made it 3-1 when he redirected a point shot from defenseman John Spetz past the glove of Commesso for his first shorthanded goal of the season.
Team USA answered back nearly four minutes later when forward Thomas Bordeleau struck for his team's second powerplay goal of the game. His shot from the left circle beat Herbst glove side as forward Dylan Peterson was screening the Chicago goaltender. The U-17 team then tied the game for the second time with less than a second left in the second period when forward Ty Smilanic slapped a two-on-one pass from forward Matthew Beniers past the glove of Herbst.
Chicago regained the lead 5:12 into the third period when left wing Christian Sarlo finished off a give-and-go passing play with Abruzzese, slipping a backhanded shot through the five hole of Commesso. The goal was Sarlo's second in as many nights.
Steel right wing Cole Quisenberry scored an empty net goal with three seconds left after Chicago held off the Team USA rush as they pulled Commesso for the extra attacker with 1:43 remaining in the game.
The Steel return home Friday, Nov. 23 for Elf: A Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration game as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders come to town. The Black Friday game is also a Steel Family Pack game with a pack of four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and four chuck-a-pucks starting at just $48.
