Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel (5-7-1-0, 11 pts.) are currently on a three-game road winning streak and are set for a pair of road games this weekend. At 4-1-0-0, the road has been kind to the Steel so far this season.
Friday night is another matchup with the Madison Capitols (3-7-0-2, 8 pts.), six days after the two teams last met. The Steel closed last week with a 3-1 win over the Capitols last Saturday night and will head back to Madison to start this weekend's road trip. Steel goaltender Justin Robbins stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced while forwards Ryan Doolin (1-2-3) and Adam Robbins (1-1-2) recorded multi-point games. Defenseman Matteo Pietroniro scored the other goal for Chicago, which was the eventual game winner. The multi-point performance for Robbins marked the second time in as many games against Madison that the center has recorded two points (1-3-4). The Steel are 2-0-0-0 at Bob Suter Capitol Ice Arena, and this Friday will mark the final time Chicago travels to Madison during the regular season. Forward Robert Mastrosimone, who rejoins the team after competing in the Five Nations Tournament last weekend, scored two goals the first time the two teams met on October 12.
Including the pair of wins this season against the Capitols, Chicago is 16-8-1-0 all-time against Madison and have now won three-straight games at Bob Suter Capitol Ice Arena. Madison forward Chaz Smedsrud is the team's leading scorer this season (3-4-7) and scored two of his goals this year in the first matchup this season against Chicago (2-0-2). Forward Carson Bantle is tied for second on the team with five points (3-2-5) and recorded both of his assists this year in the October 12 meeting.
Chicago wraps up the weekend with a trip to Plymouth, Mich. to take on Team USA U-17 (5-5-0-1, 11 pts.) at USA Hockey Arena. This is the first meeting of the year against Team USA and the Steel are looking to improve upon their 27-8-1-0 record against the U-17's all time. Chicago has won the last three road games between the two teams and the last two overall.
Mastrosimone leads the team with 11 points (5-6-11) against Team USA in six career games. Forward Nick Abruzzese has four points (2-2-4) while defensemen Matteo Pietroniro (1-2-3) and John Spetz (0-3-3) each have three points. Team USA is led by forward Matthew Beniers (1-4-5) who has five points, while forward Ty Smilanic (3-1-4) and defenseman Owen Gallatin (0-4-4) each have four this season.
The Steel return home Friday, Nov. 23 for Elf: A Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration game as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders come to town. The Black Friday game is also a Steel Family Pack game with a pack of four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and four chuck-a-pucks starting at just $48.
STEEL NOTES:
Chicago gets a pair of players back as Robert Mastrosimone and defenseman Owen Power return after representing their countries at different international tournaments. Mastrosimone skated for the United States at the Five Nations Tournament in the Czech Republic and missed last weekend's games. Power has missed the last four Steel games while he represented Team Canada at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge in Canada. Mastrosimone currently leads the team with 13 points (8-5-13) in 11 games this season.
Forwards Adam Robbins (2-1-3) and Ryan Doolin (1-2-3) each had three-point weekends last week for the Steel. All three of Doolin's points came as he recorded a point on every goal in a 3-1 win over Madison on Saturday night.
Forward Jake Schmaltz picked up his first career USHL assist on Doolin's first period goal Saturday night. The University of North Dakota commit has played all over for the Steel this season.
Mastrosimone (5 games, 4-3-7), Pietroniro (5 games, 2-4-6), A. Robbins (2 games, 2-1-3) and Travis Treloar (2 games, 0-2-2) all enter the weekend with a point streak intact.
