GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Despite the cancellation of the team's March 14 Military Appreciation/Hometown Heroes Night due to COVID-19, Chicago Steel fans came together to raise more than $8,000 to benefit Wounded Warrior Project through an online jersey auction. The fundraiser was presented by McCue Chevy.
While most special event Steel jersey auctions are performed in-arena on the night of the event, this auction took place entirely online with the limited-edition sweaters available for bid from April 3-10. Of the 24 Chicago Steel jerseys available for auction, eight were purchased for the limit of $500, contributing to the proceeds received by Wounded Warrior Project.
The gross sales total marked the highest jersey auction total of the 2019-2020 season.
"Wounded Warrior Project is humbled and honored to receive such incredible support from the Chicago Steel Hockey Team," said Samantha Iaonnatti of Wounded Warrior Project. "We cannot thank the Chicago Steel enough for their continued commitment in helping transform the lives of our nation's heroes - they are truly making a difference!"
Founded in 2003, the Wounded Warrior Project mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors who incurred a physical or mental injury, illnesses, or wound, co-incident to their military service on or after September 11, 2001.
The jerseys scheduled to be worn in the game against the Green Bay Gamblers were a black and gray camouflage design with a silver Chicago Steel logo on the chest and an American flag patch on the right side of the chest. The Wounded Warrior Project logo was added on the lower back with McCue Chevy logos on both shoulders.
McCue Chevy, a Steel partner since 2015, approached the Steel prior to the 2019-2020 season with the idea of organizing a special event to benefit Wounded Warrior Project.
"Our continued partnership with the Chicago Steel and the Wounded Warrior Project has been among the most rewarding for us," said McCue Chevy Owner, Tim McCue. "To see the success of the auction, the heartfelt generosity of the fans, and to hear the stories of our troops has such an impact on us as a community and as proud Americans. They make a difference. We are proud to help in any way we can."
This was the third special jersey auction scheduled for the 2019-2020 season with previous fundraisers supporting the Cyclones Amateur Hockey Association and the Geneva Academic Foundation. Together, more than $21,000 was raised through these three special events.
"We can't thank our fans enough for their generosity, particularly during these difficult times," said Steel President Dan Lehv. "While we wish we could have celebrated active military members, veterans and first responders in person on March 14, to know that we were able to play a small part in helping an outstanding organization like Wounded Warrior Project gives us great satisfaction."
The Steel were awarded the 2020 Anderson Cup as the regular-season champions of the United States Hockey League after posting a 41-7-1-0 (83 pts) record, a franchise-best for wins and points in a season. Chicago set league records with an .847 win percentage and an average of 4.94 goals per game prior to the cancellation of the regular season and Clark Cup Playoffs on March 18.
Season tickets are available now for the 2020-2021 season at Fox Valley Ice Arena starting at just 5 games for $45. Full season tickets are available starting at just $8 per game. In addition to affordable ticket prices, the Steel offer free parking, themed promotions and family-friendly entertainment.
