Chicago is attempting to become the first team to repeat as Clark Cup Champions since the Omaha Lancers won in the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 seasons. The top six teams from each conference qualified for this season's playoffs (two additional teams per conference than 2016-2017) which will feature four rounds of play to determine the Clark Cup Champion.
Team USA, the top seed in the Eastern Conference, received a bye through the First Round. Team USA, USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, is in the USHL playoffs for the first time in six years and has never faced the Steel in the postseason.
The Steel won the Clark Cup for the first time in team history on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, defeating the Sioux City Musketeers, 2-1 in overtime, in Game 5 of the (best-of-five) Clark Cup Final at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Tyler Gratton scored the Cup-clinching goal at the 11:30 mark of overtime.
