Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

(Davenport, IA) - The Quad City Steamwheelers Deck Mates defeated the Davenport Hooters girls 13-7 in the first ever Del Newton Insurance Agency Steamwheelers Powder Puff Football game.

"Our girls executed and followed the game plan," said the Deck Mates Head Coach and Steamwheelers wide receiver coach Shon King." We played with a lot of heart and that's all that matters. It was pretty loud in here, but when the girls heard me they got the calls and made the proper adjustments."

The Deck Mates fell behind early 7-0 only to turn around and score the next 13 points of the game. The Deck Mates went ahead for good with around three minutes left in the contest. Deck Mate quarterback, McKenzy Miller, scored on a three yard end around play and then converted a one-point conversion pass to give the team a 13-7 lead.

"We were all a little nervous," said Miller. "We knew that they were gunning for us, but we toughed up and got the job done in the second half."

After some trash talking to start the game, the Hooter girls gained the early momentum after converting on an early Deck Mates turnover. A Bonnie Collins interception of a Deck Mate pass with 2:45 left in the first quarter set up a controversial end to the first quarter. The Deck Mates thought that the quarter had ended; however, the officials had not signaled an end to play. The Hooter girls took advantage scoring on a five-yard run with no time left on the clock.

"We had a great time," said Deanna McMillon one of the stars for the Hooter girls. "We played our hearts out. After taking the early lead we wanted to keep up the hard work and not let them get any yards, but they did."

The Deck Mates finally got on the board late in the first half on a trick play. With the ball about 10 yards away from the end zone Miller pitched the ball to teammate Amanda Burroughs. With the defense closing in on Burroughs, she launched a pass into the end zone to Tana Trapp. The extra point attempt was no good, however, and the score remained 7-6.

Fans of both the Hooters girls and the Deck Mates enjoyed a hard-fought contest. Fans also had a chance to win great prizes and participate in contests. After the game all of the participants and the Quad City Steamwheelers football team went to Hooters to enjoy a post game party featuring a karaoke contest among the squad.

"This was great," said King. "We are already looking forward to the game next year. The girls all had fun, the fans had fun and this was just a great event for the community."
