Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

(Davenport, IA) - The Quad City Steamwheelers and ALCOA have teamed up to help kick off Child Abuse Awareness month with the Child Abuse Council of the Quad Cities. After the season opening game against the Arkansas Twisters on Friday, March 31; the Steamwheelers will auction special jerseys that were worn during the game. All proceeds from the jersey auction will go to support the Child Abuse Council.

"We are glad to be able to join together with ALCOA and help the children in the Quad City community," said Larry Bush, majority partner/operator for the Steamwheelers. "The Steamwheelers have done jersey auctions in the past to benefit numerous causes. They are fun and exciting for the fans, as they get to take home the jersey of their favorite player and they also help give back to the community."

The Steamwheelers will wear specially designed jersey's that feature the date of the game, Steamwheelers name, ALCOA and Child Abuse Council logos that will be auctioned off immediately following the game.

The ALCOA Foundation The ALCOA Foundation has invested nearly $411 million globally since its creation in 1952. Last year ALCOA made almost $23 million in grants worldwide. According to John Riches, Community Relations Manager, for ALCOA, the foundation provides relief worldwide, but focuses most of its efforts in the communities in which the company operates.

"Alcoa has a long history of supporting the Quad Cities," continued Riches. "Whether it is United Way, Junior Achievement or the Child Abuse Council, our goal is to make this a better place to live and work. After all, ALCOA's not only a part of the community so are our employees and their families."

One of the corporate priorities for ALCOA focuses on Safe, Healthy Children and Families. As part of this corporate initiative, ALCOA focuses on violence and injury prevention; health education, promotion and prevention; and people with disabilities. With that in mind, ALCOA has teamed up with the Child Abuse Council to help stop child abuse in the Quad Cities and to educate people on prevention.

"The proceeds of the jersey auction will go to the Child Abuse Council to help support the council's annual Lifesaver Campaign which raises both awareness and funds to help prevent child abuse here in the Quad Cities," said Riches."

Child Abuse Council Every April, the Child Abuse Council conducts a public awareness campaign to help raise awareness about the issue and to help prevent children from being abused.

"Every year, the month of April is identified as Child Abuse Prevention Month," explained Susan Swisher, Executive Director of the Child Abuse Council. "The goal is to educate the community on the prevalence of child abuse and how it occurs. But most importantly, we make sure folks know what they can do to help kids," said Swisher. "Kids are our most precious resource. When you look at things from a community perspective, our children are our future. We need to make sure their childhood gives them the best opportunities to grow and become productive adults."

The Child Abuse Council runs and supports many programs in the Quad Cities area. Not only do they promote awareness about the issue, but they provide community education, support services for new parents, and help in treatment programs for children that have been abused.

"This partnership with the Steamwheelers and ALCOA will certainly help to raise awareness," said Swisher. "But it will also help raise dollars that can be turned to help fund local programs such as our prevention services. One of our main priorities is to stop child abuse before it happens and one of the best ways to do that is to provide support for first-time parents."
