Steamers Split Double Dip

Ben Whetstone's walk-off double in the first game of the twinbill on the road versus the Morehead City Marlins keeps the Steamers' hopes alive to finish in second place in the first half of the 2018 season. Edenton won the first game 3-2 and lost the next 5-2, brinigng the overall record to 11-14.
The Clams were home in the first contest despite playing at Morehead City due to a scheduled makeup that could not be played at Hicks Field.
The two-bagger was Whetstone's second in just six games and is already off to a hot start, batting .350. He finished 2-for-4 in Game 1.
AJ Spencer started for Edenton and fanned a season-high 10 Marlins in 5.2 innings. He did not get the win in arguably his best outing of the year, however.
Ryan Scharf, his teammate at Middle Tennessee State University, secured the victory, tossing the final 1.1 frames. Scharf, now 1-0, did not allow a run.
Josh Netterville and Bryson Worrell helped on the offensive end with one RBI each. Will Ethridge roped a double and Rich Ciufo and Anthony Warnke contributed one hit apiece. Warneke also scored two times.
Game 2 was a different story for the Steamers. They were only able to muster up four hits against the lethal Marlins pitching staff. Devon Gardner supplied the only run batted in, a sacrifice fly to the outfield.
Morehead City actually had one less hit than the Clams, but a couple of costly mistakes came back to sting them.
An Edenton error and a bloop hit falling behind second base helped hand the Marlins the win to avoid the doubleheader sweep.
Troy Maslowski suffered the loss in a third of an inning. He surrendered one run on a hit and one walk.
Zach Stromberg started for the first time in a Clams uniform, battling for four impressive innings. He was in control up until his final frame, giving up two runs on one hit and three walks.
Angelo Gennari finished it on the mound for the Steamers. He threw 1.2 innings and gave up two more runs.
Edenton closes out the first half on Saturday night at home against the Wilmington Sharks at 7 p.m.
