MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Coming into Saturday night's tilt against the Morehead City Marlins, the SwampDogs had yet to defeat their divisional rivals in 2018.
Although Fayetteville got off the bus in Morehead City with victories in its last four games, the SwampDogs struggled to muster up much offense against the Coastal Plain League's stingiest pitching staff, falling to the Marlins 6-0.
While the SwampDogs were not able to break through on the scoreboard, there were several bright spots at the plate. Three of Fayetteville's five hits on the night went for extra bases, as Matt Kelly (Portland), Tyler Shuck (Florida Gulf Coast) and Trent Franson (Houston Baptist) each doubled. Kelly's sixth-inning hit marked his ninth double of the summer, tied for third-most in the league.
Saturday also featured a trio of encouraging performances from the SwampDogs' bullpen, as Jared Crews (Middle Georgia State), Kyle Klotz (Belmont) and Logan Carter held the Marlins to just one run in five innings of relief.
With the first half officially in the books, Fayetteville sports a 13-12 record, good for second place in the East Division. The SwampDogs are 6-2 in their last eight games and will attempt to build on that momentum as they push for a playoff spot in the second half of the season.
Fayetteville has a day off Sunday and renews its pursuit of the Petitt Cup Monday night in Wilmington. The SwampDogs then return home Tuesday for the 12th annual StriKing Out Cancer Night, presented by Cape Fear Valley Health System. The team will be auctioning off one-of-a-kind pink jerseys before capping off the night with the biggest Fireworks extravaganza of the year!
