Wilmington Sharks News Release

On the road for the first half finale, Wilmington (7-18) fell to Edenton (12-14) at Historic Hicks Field.

The Steamers were on the board first in the first. Edenton loaded the bases with no outs against starter Caleb Bishop (0-3). Ben Whetstone reached on a fielder's choice to go up 1-0. The next batter though grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning with just the one run allowed.

It was the Sharks turn to load the bases in the fourth against Ben Anderson (1-0). With no outs, the visitors failed to push a run across to remain behind 1-0.

In the ensuing at bat, the Steamers scored six innings to blow things open. A solo homer, a three- run shot and an error in the outfield allowed Edenton to take the 7-0 lead.

Edenton added a run in both the sixth and seventh inning to expand the lead to a nine run advantage over the Sharks.

Then in the eighth, a couple of pinch hitters came in and made a difference for the Sharks. With two on, Joe Gruszka laced a double into the gap to cut the Steamers lead to seven. The next hitter, Zach Bridges crushed a two run homer over the left field wall to cut it to 9-4.

The Sharks walked in the ninth but could not push across a run and fell 9-4.

Wilmington ends the first half losing 15 of its last 17 game, including four in a row. The Sharks finished 4-9 at home and 3-9 on the road.

Last summer, the Sharks finished the first half below 0.500 and bounced back to make it all the way to the CPL Petitt Cup Finals before losing to Gastonia.

The second half starts at home tomorrow as the Sharks host the First Half East Division Champions, the Morehead City Marlins. First pitch tomorrow is 6:05 and gates open at the Shark Tank at 5:00.
