WILMINGTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers downed the Wilmington Sharks 8-2 in game one of the East Division Championship series on Sunday night. Edenton (3-1, 43-16) is one win away from reaching the Petitt Cup Championship, while Wilmington (2-2, 31-26) faces elimination in tomorrow night's contest.

Jake Cousins collected the win for the Teal and Black. Cousins (1-0) hurled six innings while allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits while walking one batter and fanning four. Austin Lord picked up the save, finishing the final two innings while surrendering one earned run on three hits with one walk to two strikeouts.

Caleb Johnson took the loss for the Sharks. Johnson (0-1) lasted five innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits with three walks to one strikeout.

The Sharks started the scoring in the third inning. Nick Rotola led off with a single, stealing second in the next at bat. After Brett Smith was hit with a ball, a wild pitch from Cousins put runners on second and third. Two at bats later, Kyle Nowlin grounded out to second to drive in Rotola and give Wilmington a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks doubled their advantage in the fifth. Smith knocked a two-out single, and Alex Destino followed with one of his own. Cole Gruber misplayed the ball in center field, allowing Smith to score and put Wilmington up 2-0.

The Steamers charged back with four runs in the top of the sixth. Mick Fennell and Chad Sedio opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Tony Rosselli drove in a run with a double in the next at bat. After Nick Maguire walked to load the bases, Chance Shepard cracked a two-run single to put the Clams on top. A sacrifice fly from Gruber in the next at bat plated Maguire to give Edenton a 4-2 lead.

The Teal and Black doubled its run total in the top of the ninth. Three consecutive singles from Trey Hair, Evan Rogers and Julian Russell loaded the bases, and Mick Fennell scored everyone with a grand slam to open an 8-2 lead.

The Sharks added one run in the bottom of the inning, but they could get no closer.

The Edenton Steamers host Wilmington for game two of the East Division Championship series on Monday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. For more information about the Petitt Cup Playoffs, fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
