Sharks Shell Clams 13-3 to Force Game 3

August 10, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Wilmington Sharks (32-26) slugged 18 hits on Monday night as they defeated the Edenton Steamers (43-17) by a score of 13-3 at Historic Hicks Field, tying the Eastern Championship Series 1-1. Wilmington's 13 runs and 18 hits were each season highs allowed by Edenton on their home turf.

Every Shark in the starting lineup had at least one hit, with six having at least two. Wilmington knocked hits in seven of nine innings - three or more in four of these seven.

Edenton took an early 1-0 lead as Nick McGuire knocked a solo homerun to right field, but their lead was quickly erased two innings later.

In the fourth inning, Wilmington brought in two runs on four hits, including singles by Alex Destino, Kyle Nowlin, Sam Foy, and Jae Roberts. Foy and Roberts would collect RBIs. The Sharks widened their advantage in the sixth with another pair of runs.

Alex Destino's double started off the sixth and Sam Foy's second RBI single scored him from second. This hit ran Edenton starter Trevor Houck out of the ballgame. Jae Roberts and Andy Austin welcomed Steamers reliever Askew into the game with back-to-back singles, while Austin collected the RBI.

Sharks starter Andrew Locklear cruised through the first five innings, allowing just 7 of 21 Steamers to reach base safely. Locklear was able to hold the CPL's most powerful offense to just a single run on six hits while striking out three and walking two. He ran into trouble in the sixth and was replaced by Kevin Boswick, who dealt two strikeouts to end the threat.

The offensive onslaught continued with another run in the seventh on Rotola's leadoff single. Two pitches later, he was on third base after stealing a base and advancing on a wild pitch. Destino's sacrifice fly to center field scored him, making the score 5-1.

Wilmington used eight hits to push across eight more runs between the eighth and ninth innings, including a three RBI double by Nick Rotola, and a two run shot by Hayes Nelson - his first homerun of the summer.

Edenton scratched one in the eighth on a pair of walks, an error and a double. Trailing 13-2 in the bottom of the ninth, they would bring in another but get no closer.

The winner of Tuesday night's game in Edenton will advance to the next round to face the winner of the Lexington County - Gastonia series in the Petitt Cup Championship Series. For more information, follow along on www.wilmingtonsharks.com or on Twitter - @ILMSharks.
