Edenton Steamers News Release
PETERSBURG, VA - The Edenton Steamers dropped their second consecutive contest by a score of 3-1 to the Petersburg Generals on Friday night. Edenton (1-2) fell below .500 for the first time since 2013, while Petersburg (1-3) evened up the season series with the Steamers.
Blake Turner collected the win for the Generals. Turner (1-0) lasted five innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits while striking out seven batters and walking three. Baylor Sundal picked up his first save of the summer, finishing the final four innings with four strikeouts to one walk while allowing three hits.
Michael Messier took the loss for Edenton. Messier (0-1) surrendered three runs on seven hits through 4.1 innings while striking out seven and walking one.
Petersburg took the lead in the opening inning, plating one run. Brandon Purcell got things going with a one-out single, and after stealing second, he came to score on a Calvin Scott single two batters later.
The Generals doubled their lead in the third, starting with a leadoff single by Chandler Corely. Petersburg stole second once again, and a single by Purcell put runners on the corners with one out. In the next at bat, Daniel Barnett grounded into a fielder's choice at a short that scored Corely to make it 2-0.
The Steamers broke Turner's shut out in the fourth inning. After Thatcher Coleman reached on an error, Jimbo Pernetti put Edenton's first run 90 feet from home with a single to right field. A wild pitch by Turner in the next at bat allowed Coleman to cross the plate, bringing the score to 2-1.
Petersburg regained their two-run lead in fifth with a one-out rally. Sammy Miller sparked the General bats with a single, advancing to second on a passed ball. After a walk to Purcell, Barnett singled in Miller to make it 3-1.
The Steamers finish off their two-game set with Petersburg at home on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Kids ages 12 and under will have the opportunity to run the bases after the game. For more information, fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
