St. Louis Steamers News Release
The St. Louis Steamers defeated the Philadelphia KiXX 9-5 in a huge road victory in front of 5,112 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum tonight. New acquisition, Mark Thomas propelled the Steamers to victory recording the first three goals for the Steamers and recording the natural hat-trick. Steve Butcher had a big night as well - recording two goals and two assists for four points in the match.
Thomas gave the Steamers the early 1-0 advantage on the power play at 4:53 of the opening quarter, courtesy of a Philadelphia penalty for having too many men on the field. Sterling Wescott recorded the assist on the play. Philadelphia's Mauricio Vincello notched the score even 1-1, on a dish from teammate Joel Shanker at 14:53 of the period. The first quarter came to a close with the score knotted at one goal a side.
Matt Brooks gave the KiXX its first lead of the contest, 2-1 at 3:40 of the second. Thomas blasted a pass from Aaron Susi off the KiXX's goalkeeper Stuart Dobson for his second goal of the night to notch the score even, 2-2, at 10:54 of the period. The quarter ended in similar fashion as the first, in a 2-2 tie to enter the half.
Thomas completed the hat-trick with his third tally of the contest just under a minute (:47) into the third quarter. Steve Butcher added the assist to put the Steamers back on top, 3-2. The Steamers extended their lead to two, 4-2, when Joe Morelli recorded an unassisted goal a minute later (1:48). Butcher bagged a restart goal at 7:39 to lengthen the Steamers advantage to three, 5-2. The Steamers continued the third quarter onslaught, as Butcher (11:52), Craig Scheer (13:13) and Susi (13:56) each rang the bell for goals.
Sipho Sibiya added a goal at 13:39 of the fourth quarter to seal the 9-5 Steamers victory.
