Edenton Steamers News Release
PETERSBURG, V.A - John Williams pitched six scoreless innings and Edenton scored on a double steal and an RBi double by Adam Kirsch to win their 11th straight ball game 2-0 over the Petersburg Generals at Petersburg Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
Righty John Williams was tabbed for his first start of the 2013 summer for head coach Bryan Hill and his fifth appearance overall while lefty Robert Cox got the start for Petersburg.
After a slightly delayed start due to field conditions from a night earlier, Edenton began the game with their running shoes on. Laz Villa (Reedley College) led off with an infield single and promptly stole second base. He moved to third base on a Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) ground out and scored on a delayed double steal after Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) walked to make it 1-0 Steamers heading to the bottom of the first. For Villa, he improved his stolen base numbers to 13 stolen bases on 13 attempts to lead the Coastal Plain League in the category.
Through the first three innings Williams danced out of jams, stranding one runner in the first and the third innings and two runners in the bottom of the second frame. Over the next three innings for Williams he struck out seven while allowing only one batter to reach base.
Williams wrapped up his first start of the season with six innings pitched, no runs allowed on five hits and he struck out eight.
After 11 straight Steamers were retired by Cox from the third until a two-out single by Hampton in the sixth, Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) hit his CPL leading ninth double, driving in Hampton and pushing the lead to 2-0 Steamers.
Jeremy Bales (Lee University) came into the ball game in relief of Williams in the seventh and pitched a one, two, three frame followed by a perfect inning by Andrew Nelson (St. Catharine College) to get to the ninth.
Edenton took a walk and picked up one single over the final three innings against Cox, Logan Sawyer and Travis McQueen. Sawyer pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits; he walked three and struck out five, taking the tough loss 2-0 to Edenton.
Jake McCoy (College of the Desert) came in and recorded his third save of the season facing four batters in the inning and closing out the 11th straight Edenton victory and giving Williams his first win of the season.
Edenton travels back home and welcomes in the Wilson Tobs for the final time of the first half tomorrow night at Historic Hicks field; first pitch at 7:00 pm.
