July 7, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release
A four-run sixth inning for the Martinsville Mustangs was enough to hold off the Steamers on Saturday night at Hicks Field, winning 7-5.
The Mustangs tallied three doubles, one single and a walk in the sixth that was too much for the Clams to overcome. Josh Falk, Joe Boyle and Jake Lorenzini logged the two-baggers. Martinsville's victory pushes them to 5-2 in the second half, while the loss makes Edenton 1-5. The Mustangs also are now 3-0 against the Steamers this half. The Steamers showed some life in the home half of the seventh, scoring three runs but the lead was too big.
Edenton struck first in the opening frame with two runs thanks to a single from Zane Harris that plated Rich Ciufo and Ben Whetstone.
But, Martinsville's starter Addison Domingo locked in and did not surrender a hit for the remainder of his outing. Earning the win, he fanned eight Steamers in six innings.
Parker Chavers was a pest all night long, reaching base four times with two runs. He also drove in a pair of runs to bring his season RBI total to six. Five of those RBI are against Edenton. Jake Lorenzini was just as productive, adding four hits from the seventh spot in the lineup with one RBI.
For the Steamers, Anthony Warneke recorded his 10th multi-hit game of the summer. He also had two runs driven in, which leads the Clams roster with 23.
Nate Gardner suffered the loss, pitching the first five innings with five runs allowed on six hits and three walks. Matt Gill tossed the final four frames and gave up two runs with five strikeouts.
The Steamers are off until Wednesday, July 11 as the All-Star break will begin on Sunday. They are set to host the Peninsula Pilots for a 7 p.m. start.
